Tutored students increased an average of 2.1 grade levels over the year in comparison with non-tutored students who increased a 1.0 grade level.
Students who are tutored twice a week for one hour sessions produce strong improvements in reading skills.
Tutored students report an increase in confidence and an improved attitude towards education.
True Potential Tutoring believes that all students have the potential to succeed but they do not all have the same support and opportunities. Our goal is to help those LBHS students who need additional support so they can have the same opportunities for a future filled with possibilities. We provide one-on-one tutoring to students, tailoring the tutoring to the individual student. Our goal is to help put the student on the track to success: to help them graduate from high school with not just a diploma but with options for a brighter future.
Many of the successful students in the high school are those who have the parental support needed to succeed. These students have highly involved parents and financial resources for tutoring; without this support many of the offered classes become almost impossible. TPT wants to give this same support to students who do not have it. When you look the breakdown of the classes offered it starts to look like the classes with the lowest standards have the students with the least support, that does not seems fair to TPT so we are looking to change it. Our hope is that a student who knows they have a path toward a bright future will stay out of trouble because they are risking too much. If a student feels lost in school we do not want them to give up because they do not see a solution, we want to be a part of that solution.
100% of our fundraising is for tutoring as well as paying for any school supplies needed. In the 2014-2015 school year, we were able to tutor 12 students a week. In in 2015-2016, so far we are providing 14 hours of tutoring each week. Our students come to us through LBHS, Circulo De La Hispanidad and word of mouth. Our tutors are a combination of volunteers and paid tutors who have agreed to work at discounted rates to help as many students as possible.
Community support for True Potential Tutoring has been amazing, the people of Long Beach have show that they believe in this program and people from all areas of the city are reaching out to help. We are just at the beginning of what we believe is possible, we are moving forward and excited to give hope to someone who is struggling.
Please feel free to contact Cindy Schott at email@example.com if you would like to volunteer as a tutor or if you know a student who could benefit from our program or just to find out more about our program. If you would like to donate, please visit http://www.youcaring.com/truepotentialtutoring
One on One Tutoring
Tutoring sessions are custom tailored to each student’s needs. Students bring their books and worksheets to review what was covered in class that week making sure sure the student has a clear understanding and is not falling behind.
Student receive help in prepping for weekly, midterm and final exams. We also help students with Regents (upcoming and re-taking failed tests) as passing the Regents is required for a LBHS diploma (regardless of how the student did in the class). We also help students with SAT prep as well.
Coordination with Schools and Teachers
If the student and parent desire, we communicate on their behalf with the student’s teachers and staff to be sure students are getting what they need to be on the right path.
As a mom of four with kids in the local school system, I know first hand what it takes to help them be successful: the pushing, the follow up, the contact with the school, and the tutoring. I cannot imagine how my kids would do without this support. There are so many students who have to overcome obstacles we can’t even imagine in order to succeed. My goal is to help these kids and give them a chance for a better future.
I love it. Alex and all the students are so happy with this program. I saw Ricardo yesterday and asked about it, and he loves it too. Every time I tell Alex he has tutoring, he doesn’t think about it twice. He is the kind of student that likes high grades so I don’t have any problem with him. I am so happy that this program can help a lot of students who need it.Lilliana
I am so glad to see there is a program like this, it is a big help especially for the students not fluent in English. Aside from the help I provide in the subject area, I think the tutoring helps with confidence and motivation. The students want to succeed and when someone works with them one on one, they really have a chance.Jordana
Only 59% of untutored students even make it to college
